From Fountas & Pinnell’s Literacy Beginnings: A Prekindergarten Handbook
One of the (many) great things about being an early childhood educator is finding authentic ways to meet the Common Core. We are always asking ourselves “What does this rigor look like for 3, 4 or 5-year-olds?” This is particularly true when dealing with informational texts. As we plan opportunities for oral language that support investigating and inquiry-based learning, we must shift our lens from “narrative talk”. Through speaking, reading & writing we can develop opportunities for our students to “connect ideas, practice asking questions and summarize learning.” If we plan deeply over the course of a particular Science/Social Studies unit, this kind of intense & focused study will build “content knowledge and vocabulary, and will provide wonderful opportunities for children to practice the kind of language involved in explaining & seeking information!”
